How Much Does It Cost to Hire a Celebrity Chef?

How celebrity chef fees work, what agencies publish about pricing, what's included and what's extra, how booking works, and when an experienced private chef is the better choice.

A dining table laid for a private dinner in a British home, with ivory linen, olive-toned glassware and candlelight.

Booking a famous chef for an event is a very different thing from hiring a chef to cook dinner. A celebrity chef is booked for their name and their presence: a cookery demonstration at a corporate event, hosting an awards night, a talk, or a short appearance at a private party. A private chef is booked for the meal itself.

This guide explains how celebrity chef fees work, what agencies publish about pricing, what's included and what costs extra, how booking works, and when an experienced private chef will give you more of what you actually want.

How celebrity chefs are booked

Most well-known chefs are represented by speaker bureaus and talent agencies, and you book them through the agency rather than directly. In the UK these agencies list celebrity chefs alongside after-dinner speakers, presenters and hosts, and they handle the brief, the contract, travel and the logistics on the day.

The agency will usually ask for:

  • The date, location and type of event
  • The audience: how many people, and who they are
  • The format: a demonstration, a talk, hosting, a question and answer session, or cooking for guests
  • How long you'd like the chef for
  • Your budget

Fees are rarely published for individual names. Most agencies quote on request, because the price depends on the brief.

What celebrity chefs cost

The best public guide comes from agencies' own published fee bands for speakers and celebrities, which include TV chefs among their personalities. NMP Live's guide to speaker fees sets out the bands:

ProfilePublished guide fee
Experienced professional speakersAround £2,500 to £3,500
A current media profileFrom about £5,000
Better-known names£10,000 or more
Instantly recognisable names£25,000 or more
International starsCan reach six figures

Those figures are for appearances generally, not chefs specifically, and they exclude extras. In the US, All American Speakers describes celebrity chef fees as ranging from mid five figures into six figures, with some rising or niche chefs available for less.

We don't publish prices for named chefs, because they aren't public and they change with every brief. If you have a specific chef in mind, ask their agency for a quote.

What affects the fee

  • Profile. A chef with a current prime-time TV show costs far more than a respected restaurant chef with a smaller public following.
  • The format. A short appearance or talk costs less than a live cooking demonstration, which needs equipment, ingredients, a kitchen team and set-up time.
  • The length. Appearances are often booked for 45 to 90 minutes. A full evening, or cooking dinner for your guests, is a much bigger booking.
  • Location and travel. Events outside London, abroad or on a weekday morning can change the price.
  • Exclusivity and filming. Photography, filming, social media use and brand association are usually negotiated separately.
  • Charity events. NMP Live notes that most speakers will consider a slight reduction for registered charities, though there are no fixed charity rates.

What's usually extra

On top of the fee, NMP Live lists VAT, return travel, overnight accommodation and the technical kit the appearance needs, such as microphones and a PA system. For a cooking demonstration, add the cost of a demo kitchen or equipment hire, ingredients and kitchen staff.

If you want a celebrity chef to cook a meal for your guests rather than appear, expect the agency to talk about a full culinary team, a menu fee and food costs as well as the appearance fee.

Is a celebrity chef right for your event?

A celebrity chef makes sense when the name is the point: a corporate event that needs a draw, an awards dinner, a launch, a fundraiser where the chef's presence will help sell tickets, or a demonstration that guests will remember.

It makes less sense when what you really want is an exceptional meal. Most celebrity bookings are about the appearance, not the cooking, and the fee buys the name, the time and the logistics around it.

The alternative: an experienced private chef

If the goal is restaurant-quality food at your own table, a private chef is the more direct route. Many private chefs have worked in serious restaurant kitchens, some under well-known chefs, and they'll plan a menu around you and your guests, cook it in your kitchen, serve it and clear up.

The difference in cost is significant. Published UK platform rates for one evening in 2026 run from about £130 to £165 per person for two guests down to about £65 to £80 per person for seven to twelve, usually including ingredients, cooking, serving and clearing up. Our private chef cost guide has the full breakdown, and our guide to what a private chef does explains how an evening runs.

How to book either

For a celebrity chef, contact a speaker or talent agency with your date, audience, format and budget. Ask for a shortlist, confirm exactly what the fee includes, and allow plenty of time: well-known names are often booked months in advance.

For a private chef, browse our directory and filter by area, cuisine, budget and rating. Contact the chefs you like directly, and agree the menu and price with them. You can also browse private chefs by location.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to hire a celebrity chef in the UK?

It depends on the chef's profile and the format. A UK agency's published guide puts better-known personalities at £10,000 or more and instantly recognisable names at £25,000 or more, plus VAT, travel and accommodation. Fees for named chefs are quoted on request.

How do you hire a celebrity chef?

Most celebrity chefs are booked through speaker and talent agencies. Contact an agency with your date, location, audience, format and budget, and they'll suggest chefs and handle the contract and logistics.

Can you hire a celebrity chef to cook at your house?

Sometimes, through their agency, but it's a large booking that usually involves a culinary team as well as the appearance fee. If you want a restaurant-quality meal at home, an experienced private chef is usually the more practical choice.

What is included in a celebrity chef's fee?

Usually the appearance itself for an agreed time. VAT, travel, accommodation, technical equipment, ingredients, kitchen staff and any filming or social media rights are often charged separately.

Is a private chef cheaper than a celebrity chef?

Much cheaper. Published UK rates for a private chef run from about £65 to £165 per person for one evening depending on guest numbers, usually including ingredients and clearing up.

A celebrity chef is worth the fee when the name is what you need. If what you want is a memorable meal for your guests, an experienced private chef gives you that for a fraction of the price. Browse private chefs and contact the ones who fit.
